Senior High Writing Workshop: Essay Writing & Research Paper

Course description: In this course, students will use the writing process as they learn how to choose a topic, develop a thesis statement, research information, organize their ideas into an outline, write a draft, revise, and finally rewrite to publish a well-developed essay or research paper. The standard five-paragraph essay, including an introduction, a thesis statement, several body paragraphs, and a conclusion, will be taught with an emphasis on writing expository, persuasive, and analysis papers, including research and citations from other sources. Students will learn proper research procedures for using the Internet, books, and other reference sources as well as how to organize their research into a paper, properly quote and cite works by other authors using MLA documentation, create a bibliography, and develop a Works Cited page. In order to see how the revision process leads to their best work, students will compose several drafts of any assigned paper.
