French I & II

French I and III

Course description: These classes are high school level courses which will satisfy the foreign language requirement. Emphasis in all levels is on vocabulary acquisition and communication.

French I will take the students through present tense verbs with an introduction to past tense. Other basic grammatical structures are taught as well. French I students will learn about Paris and will prepare reports on tourist attractions in the "City of Light."

French II will not be offered this year.

French III - Through careful, guided practice and hard work in French I and II, the students have acquired the ability to understand spoken and written French at this level very well. They have also succeeded in being able to express themselves verbally. In French III, we will continue to focus on communication through expansion of vocabulary and further study of verb tenses and pronoun use.

French III will use the same textbook series we have been working from for the past two years, making transition very easy. We will begin with a review of basic structures covered in levels I and II. In addition to communication, emphasis will be placed on Reading and the study of Culture. In each Unit, important people and/or historical events in French history will be highlighted. These will be introduced in chronological order from the Roman Empire up to the 20th century.

Listening comprehension will remain extremely important. Since we will only be meeting once a week, the students will be asked to do some listening practice at home. They will use the Take-Home Tutor from French II in order to have the opportunity to hear native French away from the classroom. Since this material will come from Level II, they will have a constant review of what has been previously learned and comprehension should be relatively easy.

Course Objective: The objective is competency. To this end, the courses will cover all skills involved in learning a foreign language: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and cultural awareness. In order to facilitate competency, many exercises, including oral practice and paired activities, will take place in class.
