History, Literature and Science for 2nd & 3rd Grade Student
Course description: We will journey through history as we study Creation to the fall of the Roman Empire through a Biblical worldview. This class is designed to strengthen reading and comprehension skills by covering literature, history and science, as well as increase our knowledge of God’s world around us. Areas such as Bible, geography, and basic language arts will also be covered. The vast majority of required science activities will be completed in class.
This class is not designed to teach all subjects that should be covered with your child. Core areas of education not specifically covered by the class are formal grammar,spelling and math. This class will develop and reinforce your child's reading skills but is not designed to teach your child to read.
Instructor: Mrs. Corrie Carman holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and an Associate of Arts degree in Biblical Studies from Liberty University. She taught first grade in Atlanta, Georgia, for a year in a private school before starting her family. Mrs. Carman homeschooled her children for 8 years. She has been married to Jim Carman for 20 years and has 3 boys, Jonathan (18), Drew (15) & Ryan (9).

Homework Level: Students will be required to complete assigned material based on the Sonlight Core 1 instructor's guide. Generally, this takes 1-2 hours on non-class days. Work required outside of class will primarily be the reading of literature books.
Registration Fee: $50 nonrefundable (applies toward 1st semester tuition)
Tuition: $500 per semester (may be paid in $100 payments per month in August - May).
Supply Fee: $50 per semester, due in August and January

Building Use Fee: The annual building use fee for this class is $50 fee per student, not to exceed $100 per family. This fee is payable to Grace Presbyterian Chelsea on the first day of class.
Class Minimum: One class of 2nd and 3rd grade students will be formed. This class will have a minimum of 7 students and a maximum of 9 students. If class minimum is not reached, the class may be cancelled, and the registration fee will be refunded.
Required Texts: This class will use the Sonlight Core 1 - Introduction to World History Part 1 as the structured curriculum of the Bible, history and literature component. Each family is required to purchase either the 2009, 2010 or 2011 edition of the Core 1 instructor guide (available at www.sonlight.com). The classes will use all books in the 4-day program. As reading levels vary among students, your child will use the "readers" at his or her own level. (Parents may choose to purchase books from Sonlight, but it is often more economical to see what books are already owned and purchase what is needed from the thrift store, www.isbn.net, eBay or Amazon.) Some of the books can be found in the public library. Siblings may share books.
Science labs and hands-on experiments will be taken from Sonlight’s Science curriculum. There is no need for students to purchase the science curriculum. Topics we will be covering include the human body, space, world of animals & what makes us ill.
